Let’s be honest — being in front of the camera isn’t always easy. If you’re not used to it, it can feel strange or even a little uncomfortable. A lot of people feel unsure of what to do or how to act when the lens is pointed at them.
But guess what? That’s completely okay. Feeling a bit awkward is totally normal, whether it’s your first session or you’ve done this before. The great thing is: there are simple ways to ease into it and feel more like yourself on camera.
Why it might feel awkward at first
Being photographed can make you hyper-aware of yourself. Suddenly, every gesture feels exaggerated and you might start second-guessing your smile or how you’re standing. That pressure to “get it right” can make you tense — and tension shows. But with the right mindset, you can let go of that stress and let your personality come through.
Trust your photographer
They’re not just there to snap pictures. A good photographer will guide you, suggest what works, and check in to make sure you’re feeling at ease. Speak up if you’re nervous — they’re here to help, not judge.

Keep moving
Instead of holding a pose, try to stay in motion — walk, laugh, adjust your hair, talk. Movement brings life to your photos and helps them feel real and spontaneous.
Pause when you need to
If something feels off, take a break. Breathe, reset, shake it off. There’s no rush — a calm mindset always leads to better results. Bringing a friend along can also make the whole thing feel lighter and more natural.
Embrace the experience
Confidence builds as the session goes on. What starts as unfamiliar often becomes fun. The most beautiful images usually come from the in-between moments — when you’ve forgotten about the camera and just feel like yourself.
